Frequently Asked

Before you get in touch.

What is repointing and when does my building need it?

+

Repointing is the careful removal of old, failed mortar from the joints of a brick or stone wall and replacement with fresh mortar. Tell-tale signs include crumbling joints, mortar falling out at a touch, damp patches inside the building, frost-spalled brick faces, and visible cracking. Left unchecked, water gets behind the masonry and the fabric of the building begins to fail.

Why use lime mortar instead of cement?

+

Period properties (pre-1919, and many later cottages) were built with soft handmade bricks or natural stone that need to breathe. Hard modern cement mortars trap moisture inside the wall, causing damp, frost damage and accelerated decay. Lime mortar is breathable, flexible and sympathetic to historic fabric — and it's almost always specified by conservation officers on listed buildings.

Do you work on listed buildings and in conservation areas?

+

Yes — heritage masonry is our specialism. We work to SPAB-aligned methods, can advise on listed building consent applications, and provide written mortar specifications and material samples for conservation officers when required.

How much does repointing cost?

+

Pricing depends on access (scaffold vs ladder), wall area, condition of the existing joints, mortar mix specified, and finish. Every quote is fixed and itemised after a free site survey — no day rates, no surprises.

How long does repointing last?

+

Correctly raked-out and re-pointed lime work on a sound wall will typically last 60–100+ years. Cement pointing on a historic wall often fails within 10–15 years and damages the masonry in the process.

Which areas of the West Country do you cover?

+

We cover the whole South West — Devon, Cornwall, Somerset, Dorset, Wiltshire, Avon and Gloucestershire. If you're in a neighbouring county please still get in touch; we travel for the right project.
